Webber: We need to close the gap

Webber: We need to close the gap Mark Webber insists that Red Bull needs to focus on closing the gap to McLaren in the Hungarian Grand Prix but can’t just worry about the Woking-based team this weekend.

Red Bull sits second in the constructors’ championship going into this weekend despite the fact that it appears to have the edge over McLaren on outright pace.

However, with Ferrari right back in the mix for victory after its performance last weekend in Germany, Webber admitted that the team couldn’t afford to focus on just one of its rivals and had to hit the track this weekend with the aim of beating everyone on track.

"We can't say we'll let Ferrari do their thing and we'll just concentrate on McLaren,” he told ESPN. “We need to beat everyone and that's the plan this weekend - have a clean, perfect weekend and get as many points as we can. It needs to be a good weekend. We're not interested in leaving here with the gap opening. We need to close the gap here."

In an ominous warning to the team’s rivals, Webber added that he felt the Hungaroring would be well suited to the RB6 although the Australian said he expected McLaren to be closer to the pace.

"I think it's a very good track for our car,” he said, “one of the best for us, I think. It's just one weekend at Hockenheim that wasn't an amazing weekend for McLaren in terms of pace. They got some points but there was some indication that there was another team that was very strong, and that was Ferrari. So we have another team at the party.
"It's good for you guys, it's interested for us to have a fight with more than one or two people. There are quite a few people who can win the race this weekend."
