Sebastian Vettel ensured that Red Bull Racing remained on top in Hungary after topping second free practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

As was the case in the opening session, the fight for top spot was initially a fight between Vettel and team-mate Mark Webber as the Milton Keynes-based squad continued to lead the way, with the duo swapping position on top of the times.

Vettel eventually prevailed as he set a time of 1min 20.087secs on the super soft Bridgestone tyres although the German could have dipped into the 1min 19secs without hitting traffic entering the final corners on what was set to be an even quicker time.

The gap to the rest was halved in the second session however, with Fernando Alonso managing to get within half a second of Vettel’s benchmark as he also managed to split the Red Bull duo.

A time of 1min 20.584secs saw the Spaniard lap just 0.013secs quicker than Webber to secure second spot with Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa slotting into fourth.

Massa was the final driver within a second of the quickest time which suggests that the fight for pole and victory could once again be between Red Bull and Ferrari as it was last week in Germany.

Best of the rest was the Renault of Vitaly Petrov after an encouraging session for the rookie, with team-mate Robert Kubica two places back in seventh. The pair, who were split on the times by the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton, produced a series of impressive laps while running on heavier fuel loads as the session wore on.

Nico Hulkenberg was eighth for Williams, while the top ten was completed by Jenson Button and the Mercedes of Michael Schumacher. Button was amongst the drivers to complain about traffic during the session.

Jarno Trulli emerged as the best of the newcomers with a comfortable advantage over the Virgin of Timo Glock, although Trulli’s team-mate Heikki Kovalainen managed just five laps due to a technical problem on his car.

Kovalainen was the only driver not to improve on his first practice time as a result.
