Rahal calls on family ties for Indy 500

07 May 2010

Rahal calls on family ties for Indy 500 Graham Rahal has landed a ride for the Indianapolis 500 later this month, having agreed to pilot the family Rahal-Letterman Racing entry in the blue riband race.

The second-generation driver will team up with father, and 1986 Indianapolis 500 champion, Bobby after failing to attract a full-season deal to return to the Indy Racing League and contesting the recent St Petersburg, Long Beach and Barber rounds with Sarah Fisher Racing.

“I am thrilled that Graham is joining us for the Indianapolis 500,” three-time IndyCar title winner Rahal Sr said, “To have watched his career grow from the first day in karts and now to be there side-by-side with him as he tries to win Indy for himself and for our team is a dream come true for me.”

Rahal Jr, who is the youngest driver ever to win an IndyCar race, will be racing an open-wheel car for his father’s Ohio-based team for the first time, although the 21-year old has raced with RLR's sportscar programmes in past seasons.

“I am extremely excited to be racing with my father and with this team,” the younger Rahal grinned, “I have known a lot of the guys on this team since I was very young and to go after the dream of winning Indianapolis with them means a lot to me and my family. I know we can put together a quality effort and we expect to be competitive.”

Rahal, whose previous two trips to the Brickyard have come in Newman/Haas Racing machines, started fourth in last year’s Indy 500. His three IndyCar outings in 2010 yielded a top ten finish in St Petersburg in his first start of the year. His #30 RLR Dallara-Honda will have its livery and sponsors detailed in the coming week.
